Things you should know about making an insurance claim
- Write down the Date & time of loss and the exact address where the loss occurred.
- Make particular note of the other person’s vehicle involved in the accident (write down the Year, Make, Model and Serial Number or VIN number and also ensure to write down the name of both the Insurance Company and Insurance Broker as well as the Policy number and expiry date. All of this information will be on the other person’s proof of insurance ( commonly referred to as Pink Card).
- Also, ensure to write down who was driving the vehicle as it may be different than the name on the pink card or registration. Ask the driver to show you their drivers license and write down their drivers license number and also note on the license if it’s expired.
- Make note of the details of the accident and write down the way you think the accident happened.
- It’s always important to get the names and contact information for any witnesses.
- Take as many pictures as possible while at the scene. With cell phone cameras these days, one can take pictures quickly and have them ready to forward to an adjuster.
- Try and contact your insurance company or broker as soon as possible and report the accident.
- Making a claim might affect your premium upon renewal. We recommend speaking with your broker for any clarification.
After the claim has been reported to your broker or the insurance company
- Make sure you write down the Name, Phone #, email address of the adjuster that will be representing you and your vehicle. Make especially sure to write the CLAIM NUMBER they give you as it will help you receive service from anyone else in the event you are unable to reach your adjuster.
- It would also be wise to keep a written record of the date & time the adjuster contacted you and when you can expect them to contact you again
- Ensure you promptly comply with the adjuster’s requests otherwise the claim may get held up and things will take much longer to get sorted out.
- Keep any receipts for repairs or services that your adjuster asks you to pay for directly so that you can receive compensation from the insurance company promptly.
- Make and keep notes of any correspondence received in writing or conversations you may have with the third parties adjuster and provide these to your own adjuster.
- Keep records of all agreements and settlements you make with your insurance company.
