Do you own a boat or watercraft?

Chances are that if you know the difference between port and starboard, you are not a novice when it comes to boats. However, deciphering insurance terms and conditions can be confusing no matter how much boating experience you have.
Whether you own a jet-ski, runabout, cabin cruiser, sailboat or yacht, watercraft operation is a risk that needs protection just like your home or vehicle.
At Link Insurance we try to find the right options and alternatives to provide you with the best coverage possible for all your important assets including a wide variety of watercraft.
Liability
Watercraft operators are liable for any physical damages to property or bodily injury due to the operation of their boat on water or while transporting it on land. Many companies will base their premiums on your driving record.
Physical Damage Coverage
Depending on whether you choose to insure your boat as an addition to your homeowners policy or on a separate boat policy, there are two methods of determining the value of your boat, motor(s), equipment and trailer in the event of a total loss. Agreed Value is determined by the purchase price or a marine survey. Actual Cash Value is settled on the basis of replacement cost less depreciation).
All Risk and Exclusions/Restrictions
Some of the most common exclusions and restrictions include:
- Ice and freezing damage
- Lay-up restrictions (no coverage from fall to spring)
- Theft and vandalism restrictions
- Racing use
Navigational Limits
Insurance premiums are based on navigational limits or areas of usage such as inland lakes or coastal waterways. Towing coverage is an optional coverage.
Personal Property Coverage
Personal Property coverage is available as an option and can include water sport equipment , fishing equipment, and in the case of cabin cruisers, sailboats and yachts, any personal items that are kept onboard.
Boating Safety
As lakes and coastal areas become more crowded with watercraft, it is important to familiarize yourself with boating regulations and safety regulations. Operators must have a Pleasure Craft Operators Card and Personal Flotation Devices for both adults and children are mandatory. You may qualify for discounts for depth sounders, GPS, marine compass, automatic bilge pumps, fire extinguisher, alarm systems or Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons Membership.
